    Starting issues.

Okay...went to FB with this and got some help. Here is my issue. My 1980 SR500, which I've owned since it was new, has just now started to give me its only hiccup! Warm starts...are suddenly a problem. I have to apply some throttle, sometimes use the hot start button (which I have never had to do). Takes 5-7 kicks...always used to be one...maybe two. I replaced the air filter, spark plug...no change. This is a nearly flawless, stock motorcycle, with just under 33,000 miles. Any insight? Thanks

The only other thing to add is that the muffler/exhaust connection is starting to rust out. Could this be making it run lean and cause starting issues? Plug still looks very good. Thanks.

If they're still the originals, take a close look at the diaphragms in the carb, they perforate with age and fuel gets sucked through causing a slightly rich (sometimes very rich) mixture.

Thanks, Max.. These are indeed the original diaphragms in the carb. Will I be able to determine their condition by just looking at them...or, would I be wise to just go ahead and order new ones and replace? I greatly appreciate your reply...thanks again!

Hold them up to a strong source of light, if you can see pinholes, bin them, just be careful not to mix up the springs between accel' pump and overrun valve.

You might like to put your location on your profile, a moderator will be along soon to prompt you.

MadMax, this was what my old diaphragm looked like. The other one wasn't too bad...but I replaced both,
as they are original items...37 years old now! I haven't had a chance to go for a ride yet, but hopefully this was my issue.
    Thanks!

If that does not solve the issue maybe check spark strength...should jump a 6mm gap at kickover speed
check the plug cap s/b 5K ohms,do a valve adjustment and check compression pressure s/b about 150 psi
check the carb jet needle and needle jet for wear, and inspect the vacuum line from the petcock to carb ...is it perished or is there fuel in the line indicating a leaking diaphragm in the petcock.

Motoduc84, I just wanted to say Hi! I noticed your location tonight; we're both in Lincoln! I have a 78 that is pretty original, got it out of a farmshed 2 years ago. Do you ever go to Euro bike night in the Haymarket? The last one for the season was last week.

I've seen your bike! Very cool! I wasn't at the last Euro night, but was there for the previous one; my buddy and I had our old motocross bikes (my '82 Husky and his '74 Montesa) out...we were trying to stir up interest in our vintage motocross series! I will post a pic of my SR soon! Thanks for reaching out!

    Hey Motoduc84,

I have one just like it. I call her The Eggplant. She used to live in Arizona & was imported into Quebec by the PO.
She has low mileage. Still under 9K.
