Thread: Do you guys/women let your bikes warm up?

    A long time friend of mine had bought a new Honda Civic. We lived in a close apartment space, and i could always tell when she started her car in the mornings. She would start and go with no wait what so ever, no matter what season it was, and winters in Western Oregon can be sometimes cold. After a year of noticing that she never warmed the car up, I told her that she should wait at least a minute or two, in summer, and 5 or so in winter. She ignored this. Three years later her engine had lost compression and was burning oil. She ended up buying another new car after only 35 thousand miles. My Mother would do the same thing in the even nastier winters of Maryland and killed an Oldsmobile in 5 years. These are just my experiences, but my cars, and my wife's cars have all lasted at least to 300K, and that might be due to letting them warm up to operational temp. before stressing them. So my opinion is, what is the hurry? I have personal evidence that cold running, hurts cars. I let my bike get "hot," before I stress it. I also want to know if something sounds different before I commit to getting on a highway.

    I heard many years ago that the most wear on aircraft engines came from the cold start. No idea how they measured that????
    Some people have put pressurized pre-oilers in their cars/trucks to lube up the system before even turning the engine over. I havent gone to that but always give ta bit of a warm/lube up and I always get high mileage out of my engines. On the cars the body is usually falling off and the engine still runs fine.
    Last I knew my old '71 Moto Guzzi Ambassador had 89,000 mi. and had only needed two top jobs during that and the first one was just rings and a valve job. Easy to do on a Guzzi, the cylinders just sit right out there to putter with.
    On a four stroke air cooled engine frequent oil changes with a premium oil and a short warm up is 'cheap insurance'.
    BTW, I remember years ago hearing that BMW claimed that the banging gear change (and maybe the 'just start it and take off' is in the same camp?) was a sign of how 'robustly' there were built. Seems like a good way to 'sell' service.

    I always warm up the bike - some say it's ok, some not - but I just feel better about not putting a strain on it while it's cold. Also I find that when cold I experience clutch plates that are stuck together and don't release fully causing the bike to jerk forward and stall, warming the engine up seems to free them up.

    I always let mine warm up for about 90-120 seconds, til my hand is uncomfortable on the fins.

    Always. I start it and then I put on my jacket, helmet, and one glove.
    Then, I sit on it and let it warm up until the cylinder jug and head are too hot to hold on to.
    Then, I put my other glove on.
    This gives oil flow a chance to catch up with all the moving parts.
    It gives the oil a chance to warm up.
    It gives the engine parts a chance to expand to their final hot dimensions.
    It allows the clutch plates to be properly oiled with warm oil, and not stick.

    And, it doesn't take long.

    There's no way my 1981 XS1100 could be started and ridden without first warming up.
    It would choke, gag, and stall.
    Unless I leave it fully choked.
    Even then, it wouldn't be happy about it.

    So, yes, I let my bikes and cars, and lawn mower, and air compressor warm up before I wring the snot out of them.

    I was once told that, in Germany, it was illegal to let your vehicle warm after starting.
    Something to do with emissions laws.
    I don't know if it's true or not.

    I do know that a former neighbor of mine would start her engine and rev the hell out of it, and take off without letting it warm up.
    She went through several cars in a very few years.
    Hmmm.

    I always warm my engine up before riding. Unfortunately, it's about 108 degrees Fahrenheit outside today so it's shelter in place until the early morning hours for ride time, lol!

    That's no joke 107 just up the road and I didn't get up early enough to take the Sportster out for a ride. I haven't rode a bike in over a month. Work is busy 6 or 7 days a week , it just doesn't leave much time to ride. Next Sunday I'm setting the alarm for 5 am and gas up and do me a 70 + mile loop while it's cool in the morning.

    You must be suffering from lack of road/ride therapy!

    I always start the bike, then put on my helmet/gloves before taking off. Somewhere around 1-2min of idling before I take off and I don't goose it for a mile or two down the road.

    Yes I am way overdue for a therapy session. And there's only one cure. RIDE !
