I'll throw this thought in here, something that was told to me by a suspension guy at BogeMulholland back in my MX racing days. (and maybe this is more for racing than street) He told me that you should use the lightest fork/shock oil you can get away with because as oil increases in temperature it loses viscosity. So, at the end of a race your fork oil may have lost significant viscosity leading to unruly suspension at a time when you are tired and least able to deal with it. If you start with a low viscosity oil it can't get much lighter. It seems to make sense to me though I am certainly no suspension guru.

Seems to me the original fork oil in the MotoGuzzi 850T and on that I worked on (mid '70s) was very reminicent of the oil in cans of Tuna in Oil, canola maybe? Although, being Italian perhaps it was rejected for cooking olive oil??? We joking called it 'fish oil' anyway and used ATF as a replacement.
