Ball bearing steering head bearings are cheaper than tapered rollers but they are better in some respects.
They are easier to adjust to the precise "factory standard" (with the front wheel elevated and pointed straight ahead a correctly adjusted bearing will allow the front end to bounce off both steering stops and return to the ahead position with a good pull).. too tight and it will not return and too loose and it pass the forward point.
If they are standard on a bike I always continue with them as they fit better than most after market stuff and they work just fine..
Sometimes cheap is good :D

I have about 1,430 miles on my SR.
About how soon do I need to adjust mine?
